This is something we frequently hear about in India as well, especially in public hospitals. The government in the southern state of Tamil Nadu now allows a family member/friend to stay with the pregnant woman during delivery. This makes her feel secure AND protects doctors/nurses from allegations of abuse/negligence/malpractice. We have several cases of family members assaulting hospital staff or ransacking the hospital when something goes wrong. So it's a move that has been welcomed from all sides

Perhaps "emotional abuse" is in your Rights statement, if not, please add. I've seen women who have had stillborns or their babies died after birth being made to stay and recover in the maternity ward. They are subjected to seeing other happy mothers with their babies (for sometimes days before discharge) when they could be moved to another general ward. Surely, their grief can be recognized.

what a story!! It is heartfelt. The saddest part is that majority of this abusers are women. I totally agree with you, I have not witnessed it myself, but have heard stories from family friends who were abused during childbirth. I do hope that the newly implemented universal childbearing woman rights will be respected and help to eliminate fears among expectant mothers in the developing world.
